How Can Counselling Help?
When I was thinking about what to say on this page about the complexities of weight loss and hypnotherapy I came across an article entitled “Three Reasons Why Hypnosis Doesn’t Work For Weight Loss”. Read this first and then everything else here will make more sense.
Weight Loss takes time and there are no quick fixes. The idea that you can lose weight just by coming along for a couple of sessions with a hypnotherapist is nonsense and anyone who tells you different (especially a hypnotherapist!) should be given a wide berth.
Aside from my own experience (I struggled with my weight in my childhood) I also have another significant advantage. I am based in a health clinic with exercise specialists and nutrition experts, and, when you consider that effective, safe and sustainable weight loss can only be achieved by dealing with three separate elements, you understand why this is such a benefit. In order to reduce weight in a healthy, safe and sustainable way you have to address;
Developing The Right Mindset
The reason that so many people “yo-yo” on diets has nothing to do with their inability to understand what a good diet is and how to maintain it, but it has everything to do with their desire to do so at a subconscious level. Yes, you want to lose weight at a conscious level but you are constantly being hijacked at an unconscious level because something is stopping you from making the changes that you desire.
There are so many reasons for us standing in our own way, self sabotaging and struggling to get to a healthy weight without success. Low self esteem and a misunderstanding of the benefits we might be getting from being overweight (YES! That’s right) will always hamper our attempts to make a change. If I can help you understand what is stopping you from really dedicating yourself to losing weight you have every chance of finding the success which has, so far, been elusive.
Using a combination of hypnotherapy and NLP we’ll assess your current mindset regarding weight loss, and then set about making the necessary changes to help to understand and focus on the real benefits that weight loss will have for you rather than the generic ones which might have non impact on how you really feel.
The Right Diet & Nutrition
If you don’t watch what you’re putting into your body it is impossible to achieve a healthy and sustainable weight loss. But eating in a way which is healthy can also be hugely enjoyable. Human nature is such that we don’t want to feel that we are struggling or giving something up. If you go into a weight loss programme feeling that it is going to be hard, that you will need to deny yourself and that food will lose all of its enjoyment then you are almost lost before you begin.
The wonderful thing about paying more attention to both your diet and nutrition is that you’ll feel benefit in a much broader sense than simply losing weight. You’ll feel more energetic, healthier, sleep better and avoid mood swings and energy dips throughout the day.
Working either with me or with the clinic nutritionist, depending on how much detailed change you want to make, we’ll provide you with some simple and critical pointers to keep you on track and away from the foods which are most likely to undermine your hard work.
The Importance Of Exercise
We have personal trainers who can provide you with a personalised exercise schedule which fits both your needs and lifestyle. It’s important to build exercise into your life whatever your weight but it is a critical component of a successful weight loss programme.
Lots of people overlook exercise thinking that they have insufficient time. Other’s join a gym or buy fancy equipment but never go. Both the idea that you need a lot of time for exercise and that you need special gear to do so are complete myths. Our trainers can show you how to get the best response from your body easily and within the constraints of even the busiest schedule.
Working with one of the trainers at the clinic you will agree a personalised programme of exercise which will compliment the work we’re doing in the rest of the programme.
Finally, neither I nor my colleagues can do the work for you. If you are serious about making changes we can give you all of the support that you need, but you have to be ready for it. Are you up for the challenge?
I recently wrote a blog piece on How To Lose Weight Permanently which might be a good place to start.
Once you've read that, you could watch this great TED talk entitled "Stop hating your body; start living your life". Effective weight loss starts with first accepting yourself as you are. Sound counter-intuitive? Maybe, but it's true. You will never make a sustainable change without first accepting that you are "enough" as you are now. It's easiest to change when change is a choice and not an imperative.
